Description

Course Overview

A safe school environment is built on more than policies and procedures. Staff need to know how to recognise when a student may be vulnerable to harmful influences, how to respond to concerns, and how Prevent fits into the wider safeguarding responsibilities of a school.

Prevent Duty & Radicalisation Awareness provides practical awareness training for school staff who may encounter concerns about radicalisation or extremism in their everyday work. Across 4 focused sections, you’ll explore the purpose of the Prevent Duty, the legal and safeguarding framework behind it, factors that may increase vulnerability, and signs that could indicate a student needs additional support.

You’ll also learn what to do when something concerns you, including recording observations, sharing factual information, reporting to the appropriate safeguarding lead, understanding escalation, and maintaining confidentiality.

The training then moves beyond responding to concerns. You’ll explore practical ways schools can promote resilience, critical thinking, inclusion, belonging, positive relationships and community engagement as part of a proactive safeguarding culture.

Why This Course / Why This Training Is Necessary

Radicalisation concerns are not always obvious. Changes in behaviour, social relationships, online activity or attitudes may have different explanations, which is why school staff need to respond carefully rather than make assumptions.

This training helps staff understand what to notice, what to record, who to speak to and how to contribute to a wider safeguarding response.

You’ll also explore prevention rather than focusing only on concerns after they arise. Building belonging, encouraging critical thinking, supporting resilience and creating an inclusive school culture can all form part of good safeguarding practice.

Why Does That Matter in Everyday School Life?

  • A concern may begin with a small change that staff notice during normal interactions.
  • Knowing the reporting process can help prevent uncertainty from delaying action.
  • Clear, factual records support appropriate safeguarding decisions.
  • Staff awareness contributes to a consistent whole-school approach.
  • Inclusive environments can help students feel supported, respected and connected.
