Description

Course Overview

A workplace can have safety rules and procedures in place, but would you know what to do when you spot a hazard? Could you recognise an unsafe condition, respond appropriately in an emergency, and know when a concern needs to be reported?

Health & Safety at Work – Level 1 is practical introductory training designed to help learners build a solid foundation in workplace health and safety in the UK. It focuses on the everyday knowledge needed to recognise hazards, follow safer working practices, respond to common emergencies and contribute to a safer working environment.

From slippery floors and exposed cables to unsafe lifting practices, chemical hazards and poorly arranged workstations, the course explores common risks that can arise across different workplace environments. Learners also develop an understanding of employer and employee responsibilities and why reporting hazards, accidents and near misses matters.

The course introduces the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and connects workplace safety requirements with everyday behaviour, helping learners understand that health and safety is a shared responsibility.

Why This Course / Why This Training Is Necessary

Health and safety is not just about knowing the rules. It is about noticing what could go wrong, making safer choices and knowing what action to take when something does not look right.

A blocked walkway, exposed cable, damaged piece of equipment or chemical spill can easily be overlooked during a busy working day. Developing stronger hazard awareness helps employees recognise potential concerns earlier and understand when they should be reported.

Workplace safety is a shared responsibility. Employees have an active role in following safety instructions, using equipment appropriately, taking reasonable care of their own and other people’s safety and reporting hazards or accidents.

Different workplaces create different risks. Physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards can arise in different working environments, from offices and shops to warehouses, workshops and other settings. Understanding these categories gives learners a practical foundation they can relate to their own workplace.

Knowing how to respond when something goes wrong matters too. The course introduces basic emergency response principles, including protecting your own safety, alerting others, seeking appropriate assistance and following workplace emergency procedures.

Reporting can make a difference before a situation becomes more serious. Learners explore why hazards, unsafe conditions and near misses should be brought to the attention of the appropriate person and how communication contributes to a stronger workplace safety culture.

The training also provides a foundation for further development. Depending on their role and workplace, learners may choose to build on this knowledge through further training in areas such as risk assessment, fire safety, first aid, manual handling, hazardous substances or industry-specific health and safety.
